migration of birds

Migration of birds Birds navigate by several methods  1 Visual clues like shape of mountain ridges, coastal lines, topographic features on their route, rivers and streams and so on.  2 Solar navigation _ Honey bee uses the sun to navigate .For humans, one should have sound knowledge of trigonometry for locating the sun.  3 Magnetic fields _  Homing pigeons use magnetic field lines of the earth to find their way home. These birds have magnetic compass on their head which is demonstrated by attaching small magnets to their heads .  4 Star navigation_  Indigo bunting  a Bird uses stars to navigate at night. They learn the star patterns sitting in the nest while they were still small.  Some birds get disoriented in the cloudy nights . The Indigo Bunting is the only bird which has been demonstrated to have used celestial navigation. 5 Polarised Light it seems birds can distinguish polarization patterns in sunlight, as the sunlight passess through...

migration of ants

Migration of ants Several kinds of ants dogs and other animals navigate by their chemistry. They locate their way  by following the scent and chemical trails they have laid down while passing that way and reach their destination. A fascinating example of this is of a Tunisian desert ant which can wander across the desert sands, for a distance of up to 50 metres until it gets its food, upon it bites a piece of it  and retreats its path back to its nest , that is a hole of not more than 1 millimetre in diameter. Studies by R Wehner and M V Srinivasan 1980 - 81 have shown that if the Tunisian ant was  moved off after finding its food to eat, it will head off, in exactly to the direction it should have gone , if it had not been moved and stop there in dismay to search for the nest. That means the ant remembers exactly the precise direction in which it has to go and the distance it has to cover to reach its  home. Apollo astronauts plot their course to the moon using...

Mathematics Tricks and Fun

Mathematics tricks and Fun This is a website on simplified mathematics steps using Vedic mathematics from the book written by jagadguru Swami Sri Bharathi Krishna Thirtha Maharaj. My interest in Vedic mathematics was kindled by Bhaskaracharya Leelavati book, which I got as a gift from my elder sister. Then on I have collected a few books by different authors on Vedic mathematics. One day while multiplying with certain numbers especially number 9, I stumbled upon some patterns which will help children to quickly solve the problems and kindle their interest in further reading. For that matter, my interest in mathematics was lit up by my late father Baban M.Shet, though I failed to answer his random questioning of multiplication table. It is my nature not to take failures lying down. I used to score 100% marks in all maths examinations. So I want to start the spark in children. They can take it as carrier or hobby. There are great mathematicians who were judges and had maths as hobby....
